Book Review

The story of Elle Jade Khanjara based on the tragedy Macbeth but also movie Mean Girls. After a terrible event at the party where Elle went with her coven on her 16th birthday, she dedicates her life to revenge. She changes her look and name to Jade and transfers to the St. Andrew School to be closer to the golden boys that hurt her.

She has a perfect plan that works perfectly from the beginning. She knows exactly how to manipulate them like marionettes and get into their close circle. She makes one of them fall in love with her, girls her friends and boys attracted to her. No one suspects that they are a part of her game. She makes them their targets the same as they did a target of her at the party. She wants to end their legacy so no girl will be hurt by them.

She wasn’t alone in this. She has her closest friends; Mads, Summer, and Jenny. They were calling themselves a coven. They are strong, well-trained and unbreakable together. They helped her to implement the plan to life. All power was theirs and no one could stop them until everyone will pay for their sins.

My thoughts:

It’s the craziest and most twisted story I ever read. The story about the revenge and power of the hurt woman. In the beginning, I was so confused about what is happening; if it’s a fantasy or not because there were used words like coven, wings, and powers but all of it was just metaphors to give a story a bit of magic. It’s full of pain, confidence, and desperation. It’s hard to shortly summarize all my emotions about this book as it touches so many hard subjects like sexual harassment, rape, and murder. The way boys from St. Andrew treated any girl then met on their way is disgusting. First, they can’t even properly call a girl by her name. Every time they behaved like all of them are their properties or they can do with them whatever they want it made my blood boil. The worst thing is that’s how it looks nowadays. The men with power and money think they own the world and they can do whatever pleases them.

The main character is a smart and beautiful girl. He came up with a flawless plan on how to pay back the people that hurt her. They chose the wrong girl. She decided to end this so no one will be hurt by them again. I was so impressed by her manipulation abilities. She manipulated all of them in a way they didn’t even expect it. They thought she is powerless, but she showed them how wrong they were from the beginning.

It’s hard to write about this book without any spoilers. The action starts already in the beginning so you will never get bored. One of the very interesting things in this book is that all the events happen within one or two weeks, but it feels like so much longer especially how much happens within these days.

Rate: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The book is very powerful and dedicated to all women that were in a position like Jade. It’s a bloody story but it shows exactly how the girl feels after some jerk takes whatever he wants from her. They are not okay and probably never will be, especially that most of them are walking out of it without any consequences.
I’m so happy that I won this ARC copy last year and I finally read it. Thank you so much Hannah Capin for this journey. I love this book and I can’t wait to read The Dead Queens Club!

Book review

San Francisco isn’t the safest place to live since the time the first gang called Herons appeared on its streets. The richest people of the town were leading the town, and no one was able to stop them until the new group Boars were formed just to stop them. It was their main purpose in the end but with the time they lost it and became even more dangerous to the city. They started the dangerous game Wars.

With the years the new gang came to the city. No one knew who they are exactly and on which side they are. Some say they are the most dangerous ones, but no one knew the truth. They are called the Stags.

On the day of the 18th birthday of the people living in the city. The gangs could recruit them to take part in the Wars for a year. If you are in, you cannot leave, that’s the main rule. The Wars are dangerous, and everyone knows the cost of taking part in it. It also gives you a house and the money that a lot of recruits need.

Valerie for the last years planned to join Herons because of what happened to her brother. She was looking for revenge, but the police couldn’t identify the person who killed her little brother. The only way to find the guilty person was joining the Wars. When she turned eighteen one of the gangs found and recruited her. The only problem was that it wasn’t the group that she wanted to join. She wasn’t sure if she should do it but when the leader of the group promised her to reveal who murdered her brother, she didn’t hesitate any longer. She became one of the Stags.

My thoughts:

I cannot find words to describe how much I enjoyed this book. It was brilliant. The story, characters and their history together made the book perfect. I honestly couldn’t put it down. I wanted the story to go on and never end. I wish the author will write a continuation of the story because a lot of things were not explained, and I want to know what happens to everyone in the future.

Besides being a great read, the book was also heartbreaking. I look back to it and most of the characters were broke inside and there is nothing that can fix what happened to them. Valerie is one who will never be the same girl as she was before she lost her brother and the Wars. It’s not possible to recover after it. For some reason, she annoyed me in this book but it’s only because she was scared to lose more than she already did. She was very determined. Even if she was scared, felt alone and out of place, she still stayed and fought to reach her goal.

Jay is a very complicated character in the book. He makes you love him and hate him at the same time. He went through a lot and I feel like a lot of people disappointed him. That’s why he wants to do everything his way so it will never happen again. He trusts only his close friends/gang members and maybe his mother, but I think it’s more complicated between them.

I think Micah is my favorite of all. He is a friend/boyfriend everyone wishes to have. He is caring, kind and down-to-earth. He didn’t let the Wars change him. He was the one who wanted to leave it the most. He didn’t want to leave his friends and that was the reason why he wanted the Wart to finally end. I wish he could play a bigger part in this story. He deserved better than he had.

I don’t know if you also were fans of fan fictions when you were younger, but I loved them more than books when I was 13-14. My favorite ones were the ones about gangs and dangerous love. When I read this book, it takes me back to this time. It’s very similar but ten times better and much better written.

The last thing I would like to talk about is the short love plot. That’s the part I was a little bit disappointed. I wished it would develop more and we will get more stories about it but as fast it came the same way it was gone. I need more of them. As much as I like the ending, I want to change it. I don’t even need a change I just need a happy end for them.

Book Review:

It’s the last night before the first day of school after summer break when Nora went to her friend’s house to spend time with her friends. Later this evening when she was going back home by bike, she felt something pulling her back what made her fall from the bike. When she saw the guy, who did that to her she runs away from there as fast as she could because she thought he wants to attack her. When she got back home, she heard a knock on her door. It was him. He stood there with her wallet in his hand. As much as suspicious it was, he gave back her wallet and apologized to her for scaring her. She has never been so scared in her whole life. The only thing she couldn’t forget after this night was the unearthly ice blue eyes of this boy.

On the next day at school, everyone was talking about two new students in her school. She was the only girl in her group that wasn’t interested in them until she saw the eyes of one of them. He was the same guy who was following her yesterday. Everything was alright until this they. They changed her calm life into a disaster.

Her best friend Felicia changed completely after getting to know Danny and Ben. She got crazy and jealous of every girl that Danny was talking to. Especially if this girl was Nora. She couldn’t understand that she wasn’t interested in him. She didn’t want to listen to Nora, she acted very strange this whole time and kicked Nora out from her group. It wasn’t the only thing that was strange about these boys and their appearance. They are hiding something, and Nora wants to find out what it is exactly.

My thoughts:

It’s hard to explain what I think about this book. It had its parts I liked and the ones I didn’t like. Overall the concept of the story was very good. It was mysterious and surprising at the times, but I think that the author focused more on the high school and love life of the main character than on the real fantasy part. The story was developing very slow and there were even no signs that there will be anything more than the love story. However, I like that the main character even if she knew that something is very strange in these two new guys, she never even though that it would be something unearthly even after these small signs.

I’m not a big fan of Nora if I could choose my favorite character in this book that would be Ben or Michael. They were my favorite from the beginning. However, Nora is a very problematic character from chapter one. I know her school life changed but after what her friends did two her, she shouldn’t even want to hang out with them. Felicia hurt her so many times and she still was trying to repair their friendship. I don’t understand how can she be so naive to go through all of it and still go back to her while they don’t even want to talk with her. I just cannot understand it.

I think my favorite part of the book was the way Ben was treating Nora. There was one situation in the cinema I just loved and couldn’t go over. I think it was my favorite part of the book. Even if she blows him off, he’s still very caring and supportive of her. Michael is another good example of a good friend/person in this book. That’s why I don’t understand why she wanted to be back friends with Felicia so badly while she had such a great friend around her.

Rate: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I think I expected something different from the book and that’s why I wasn’t enjoying it as much as I thought I will, but it wasn’t a bad book. The story was interesting, and the writing was flawless and that’s what makes a book good. It’s a debut book so I feel that the upcoming books of this author will surprise us.

I would like to thank TheWriteReads and the author for providing me this ARC and inviting me to this blog tour. I was very happy to read and review it! I hope you enjoyed reading my review!

Book Review

Jessie Flores is an average teenage girl who is struggling with the same problems as all girls in the whole world. She lives alone with her dad and her only friend is Gary who transferred to her school. She’s a huge comic fan and her focus lately is a boy called Tony, one of the most popular guys in school. She doubts that she may even have a chance with him until he showed his interest in comics and asked her for a recommendation as she works in her uncle’s comic shop. As he promised to come to the shop to meet her there, she decided to prepare well for this meeting.

She wanted to change something in her look. Her friend Gary recommended her change hair color and she went for it. She is a brunette and she wanted to add to it a light red shade. She didn’t know that the hair dye she got was magical. On the next day, she woke up with strong scarlet hair color.
Her hair color wasn’t the only thing that changed. She got a new unusual power. Her hair burns into flames every time she got scared, angry or nervous. She got them on purpose because she is the chosen one. She is the one who was prophesied to save the world from evil. She needs to learn now how to do it.

My thoughts:

Jessie is a young girl that just finds out that she is the one who needs to save the world. The thing I loved about her that she freaked out and didn’t want to do it. In most of the books, young girls take information like this the same as a request to go shopping. She wanted to go back to her normal life with normal problems. I love that she showed a real reaction because that would be a reaction of anyone who would find out about it. Even if she isn’t happy about her new abilities, she tries to prepare for the fight. She is very determined to learn about the new world and how to properly use her powers. She is young but I think she was a perfect choice.

The book has kind of The Vampire Academy vibe. The main characters of both books were very alike and that’s the part I enjoyed. The book had all I like in the books: a strong female character and good humor. As a fan of Marvel, I also enjoyed a part that the main character was obsessed with the same comic characters as I am. I like it when the characters in the books are not plain, they have a history, hobbies and a unique way of thinking. This book had all these things.

I enjoyed a book but sometimes I couldn’t focus on the audiobook, so I think I lost a lot of things that happened in the book. The story was good, but it wasn’t the one I couldn’t stop to listen/read. It’s kind of an easy/fast read for the busy days. The audiobook itself was very well recorded. The narrator has the talent to take you to the world of the book. I may listen to the book one more time because I feel I lost some important parts in between. I enjoyed the story so maybe I will come back to it soon.

Book review

Natalia Winters is going through the rough year when she finds out about her illness. It takes all the fun part of her life and separates her from her friends. Regardless, she tries to focus on the love of her life which is art. She is working as an artist at a very high position. She was working to get to this point her whole life. Her social life isn’t as perfect. She’s an introvert but she still feels a lack of love and social life. She has a big issue with sleeping. The day when she paralyzes during the night is the same night when she got teleported to the weird place that looked like a space ship. She thought it is a dream. The man she met there wasn’t a normal human being. He looked unearthly, his skin was blue and the way he spoke was completely different. He told her he is a doctor and he can help her to cure and come back to her normal life. She thought it’s all just a dream and she didn’t take any of it seriously. The next morning, she woke up in her bed. Everything was the same as yesterday, the only thing that wasn’t right was a metallic object that she holt in her hand. The object that could transport her back to the space ship.

The book shows a transformation of Natalia from broken to a strong woman that fights for a better life for her and a person she loves. She finally discovers the purpose of her life more important than work. She’s eager to starts a new life until someone comes on her way a destroy everything. This time she doesn’t hide and cries until she feels empty inside. She is ready to fight.

My thoughts:

Let me start with the first most important thing that happens in this book. I just wrote about it but I’m in love with the whole way Natalia is going through in this book. She could be a little bit annoying at the beginning but later I feel like everything that happened gave her a reason to stay alive. She’s learning how to be this new person she became, and I think that even she prefers this side of her. She is not a broken shell anymore. She is a fighter.

The story is new to me because I think I read a science fiction book only a few times. I’m more fantasy kind of person but I LOVED THIS STORY! I honestly cannot wait to read the second part of this book series. I hope it will come faster than in a year. The story finished in a way that the only thing you can think about is reading another part of this story. I have no idea what will happen next and believe me I really want to know what it will be. You will know when you will read this book.

In the book, the author shows two words of two completely different creatures. Even with all this difference, they both find a way to their hearts and fall for each other. As the book says, they are a million miles away but doesn’t important for them as long as they have each other.

The ending made me mad. I was waiting for a happy ending. Even if I knew something will happen because it’s going to be a book series, I still hoped there will be a happy end. Unfortunately, there is not BUT this ending may make the second book more interesting and what is most important, let Natalia show her new self. I’m very excited to read it!

Five things that can make you dislike a good book

1. When your expectations are too high before you start reading the book.

I don’t know if I am the only person who feels like this but it happens so often for me. If I am seeing book everywhere and see how people enjoy it or are excited about it, the thought sticks to my mind and with each opinion, picture or post about the book I have a higher expectation about the book. I have a picture in my head about this book before I start to read. When I am finally reading a book I have in the back of my mind that it book needs to be amazing and I am waiting for a moment that will surprise and strike me down. If I don’t receive from the book, even if the book is great I can’t enjoy it as much as I would without all these thoughts about it before. I don’t know if it makes sense for you but it happens very often to me.

2. When the writing style of an author isn’t as good as the story.

The writing style is a very important part of the book. It needs to be authentic and express well the feelings of the characters so the readers can find their self in the book. If the writing is too rush and flat it can easily ruin the book. I read a few books like this and I enjoyed them but I felt like I cannot connect with the characters because I couldn’t feel any emotions from them. However, if the characters overreact everything it’s also too much. I understand that one of the characters is like this but if every person in the book is like this then something is wrong with it. Another part of it that can ruin the good book is when the main characters are very irritating. The book can be a masterpiece but if the main character irritates me I can’t like or enjoy the book. I have too many irritating people in my life I don’t need them in my books.

3. When you hear too many bad opinions about a book.

It happens very often that the book I like has a lot of bad opinions. It’s fine, every single person like a different book. The only problem is when I’m reading too many bad opinions about the book and when I finally read the book I am just looking for a bad side of it. I see every single thing that people mention and I can’t enjoy it anymore as I would do without it. I am so glad I didn’t do it before I read any of Throne of Glass books. I love these books but I know that a lot of people didn’t like it as much as I did. I learned my lesson though and I am trying to avoid reading about the book before I start reading them.

4. When the continuation of the book isn’t as good as you expected it to be.

I thing everyone met this problem. It happens so often that the continuation of the book you like doesn’t meet your expectations. I really would rather if the author would finish the story within one or two books without expending it. It can bring a bad taste to the books you liked. It happened so many times to me that I stooped liking a book only because the next books were not good enough.

5. When you read too many spoilers about the book and it doesn’t surprise you in anymore.

Spoilers can both discourage you to continue reading a book or encourage you to continue. It happens very often that you scroll down the timeline of twitter or pinterest and you bump into the spoilers for the book you are currently reading. I think one or two are not doing much damage but more can already ruin you the whole view of the book, especially when you don’t like what will happen. The worst thing is to spoil yourself the ending because it’s always the best part of the book and to be honest if it’s not surprising for me, I will be very disappointed.

Can you think about more things that make you dislike a good book?

I hope you enjoyed my today’s post! I was very busy lately with uni and work but I have more things coming soon. On 18th of September will be my stop on Ultimate Blog Tour and I will post my review of the book A Different Time by Michael K. Hill. Later on I will post a review of One By One by D.W. Gillespie and The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen. I am very excited for this two books.

ARC Review // How the Light Gets In by Katy Upperman

Book Review

The book about a seventeen-year-old Callie who lives in Seattle together with her parents. After the tragic death of her younger sister, Chloe, Callie couldn’t find her place in the world and live the life she had until this moment. She gave up on all her dreams and goals. She gave up all her friends, school, swimming, and her old life away. Her parents couldn’t accept the fact that their little daughter died. Her mother started to drink and completely distance herself from them. Callie instead of alcohol used weed to handle the pain and guilt she felt.

Her dad couldn’t tolerate it anymore. When the summer came, he gave her to choose between a Montana wilderness camp for troubled teens or summer in Bell Cove with her Aunt Lucy. The camp wasn’t an option, so despite the circumstances of her sister’s death she chose summer with her aunt. The purpose of it is to help her aunt in the renovation of her house, but for her dad, it is for her to recover. It wasn’t an easy task for her to go back to the place where she lost her sister. She had a problem with sleeping and communicating with her aunt. In the first week, she meets Tucker, who is working for Lucy and taking care of the yard. Callie from the beginning tried to keep him on distance but with time it was harder than she thought it might be.

Besides arguments between Callie and her aunt, everything went smoothly but only until weird things started to happen. Someone was watching her and playing with her. It started with open doors but later on her sister’s belongings suddenly appeared in her room. There were two possibilities for how to explain this: the house is haunted or her sister tried to communicate her.

Another book and another wonderful story. The main character Callie is a wreck when we first meet her. She doesn’t feel a need to continue the life she used to live. She is surrounded by guilt and pain. The only thing she wanted was to go back in time and stop her sister from running away. At first, she cannot see her dad’s purpose of sending her away, but with the time she recovers. Work with her aunt and spending time with Tucker. Callie is a very complex character. It’s difficult to understand her way of thinking and her choices. Besides all her mistakes I like her, she is a strong girl and even if it’s hard; she fights to win her life back. Love helped her with it.

This story is heartbreaking but also beautiful. It shows that our life doesn’t end when the tragedy happens; We still have a chance to live our life even if it’s hard. There is always someone who will bring light to our life. We just need to let someone help us and let the light in.

ARC Review // The Unfettered Child by Michael C. Sahd

Book Review

The story about an eight-year-old Samara, who together with her parents and tribe, follow a nomadic existence. One day, all the women went for an expedition. Natalia, mother of Samara took her with them. When all women worked, Samara drifted away to play with her cousin Karena. Sometime after she left, elves attacked and kidnapped all women. Even if Karena hid Samara panicked and got noticed by elves. Without her knowledge, she unlocked the magic she was gifted. She had no control over it and attacked all her surroundings. She was the only one who was left behind. She returned to her tribe and explained what happened to her father and grandmother except for the part with her magic. She was afraid of it and blamed elves.

Soon her secret was revealed when the elves attacked again. She had to run and leave everything behind. She didn’t leave alone. The voice in her head that appeared together with her magic turns out to be a spirit called Illtud hidden in the gem she had always with her in the shape of a knife. He promised her to teach her everything about magic and how to control it. He became his friend as he was the only one who took care of her. He gained her trust and led her to the camp of elves where he was supposed to wait for her parents for her.

I have so much to say about this book. It was the first time I read a book from the kid and surprisingly I enjoyed it even more than from her father Orin or Nikolai. Samara is very sensitive but also very strong at her age. She went through a lot and with each her step new obstacles appeared on her way. Her only dream was to be again with her loving parents. Her story is tragic, and she deserved much more than she got. This leads us to her ‘friend’ Illtud. If you want to read the book without my spoilers, stop reading right now.

(Warning: Spoilers)

Illtud is a two-faced liar who just cares about himself and his revenge. She did everything to gain the trust of Samara just to get control over her. He used powerful words like ‘I love you’, ‘I care about you’ and ‘I am your friend’ just to put a knife in her back at the end. I honestly never hated a villain as much as I hate him. He made even me believe he is good in this book. Next, to all violence in the book, I thought he would bring peace between the elves and humans, but I was wrong. It was all just a lie.

I highly recommend this book to all people that love fantasy world. This story is full of magic, elves, unconditional love and a beautiful bond between a father and daughter. The Unfettered Child is now available for pre-order on Amazon and will be released in e-book and paperback form on August 28, 2019.

I hope you liked my review! The next post on my blog (18.08.2019) will be a review of How the Light Gets In by Katy Uppermann for a blog tour organized by FFBC Tours.

Review // The Shadow Queen by C. J. Redwine

Book Review

An author of this book retells a Snow White story in an amazing fantasy world of magic.

Lorelai Diederich, crown princess of Ravenspire after the death of her father runs away from the castle and wicked queen Irina, together with her younger brother and guardian Gabriel. They are hiding for years so the queen doesn’t know they are still alive. Princess practices her magic abilities to win her throne back and bring the light back to her country in the future. Everything complicates when she meets the king of Eldr on her way. She helps him once but their paths cross many times later in a way she would never imagine. It forces the princess to stand up to queen faster than she thought.

The story itself differs from the original story of Snow White. The princess of Ravenspire is a very strong heroine that is able to sacrifice her life for a better future of her people and family. She is not a typical princess who is waiting for a prince to save her. She is fighting by herself and try to keep save people she cares about. She lost a lot but instead of letting herself down, she keeps going to reach her goal for them.

The king of Eldr is also an interesting character in this book. He changed very quickly from a rich, spoiled kid into the real king who is ready to die for his people. He is different from his friends. You can see it already during his first meeting with Lorelai. His good heart just keeps pushing him into troubles, which lead him to do things he would never do.

I would highly recommend it to people who still are a fan of classic fairy tales or Disney. I’m glad that each book tells a different story because this story had a nice ending and I think it would be too much to expand it for another book. I can’t wait to read the next book. I didn’t check what it is about so it will be a surprise for me.
